Perfume Strips You Naked!
A Note from Amin Golshani About One-to-One Customer Engagement and the Power of Personal Connection
The last day of Esxence always triggers deep emotions and a sense of nostalgia in me.
Last week was truly wonderful, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone who visited our booth to discover our new creations and spread the joy of fragrances! Beyond the valuable exchanges and business connections, I felt incredibly honored to experience the joy from engaging directly with perfume enthusiasts and some of our final customers on the last day. There was a magical moment that unfolded after years, an intimate experience where I could suddenly feel a deep connection with another person.
My journey in this industry started 19 years ago when I was just 17, taking my first steps at one of Tehran's oldest perfumery boutiques. My first responsibility was to carefully clean the perfume bottles and shelves, ensuring they were spotless for our customers. After completing my training, I was finally permitted to interact with clients, and soon I found myself eagerly testing fragrances with them and engaging in fascinating conversations. Our discussions covered a wide range of topics, from the weather to their favorite books, treasured memories, careers, celebrations, and the nostalgic scents that held special meaning for them. It was during these interactions that I realized how fragrances could peel away a person's mask, allowing them to explore scents with a childlike curiosity and share personal moments in the process. Because a perfume is more than just a scent; it serves as a portal. It weaves a thread that connects us to our past, grounds us in the present, and guides us toward future experiences and adventures.
This intimate experience unexpectedly helped me build my confidence and openness. Although I was quite shy back then, it was my first chance to connect with others and forge meaningful relationships. I remember occasionally spending up to an hour assisting someone in discovering their perfect scent. These cherished experiences are what ignited my passion for this craft and continue to inspire me every day.
Regrettably, due to the rise of chain perfume retailing, we are witnessing a decline in these meaningful interactions and connections. Nevertheless, I hope that in small perfumeries and boutiques around the world, glimpses of that joy and intimacy still thrive.
Many brands participating in Esxence express that the last day tends to be hectic, and they prefer not to be present for final customer interactions 😉. Perhaps it's time to adopt a different perspective. Even from a purely commercial standpoint, there is nothing more valuable than the feedback from the end consumer. While distributors and retailers can offer valuable insights on product development and communication, nothing compares to the feedback from the final consumer 😉.
